Queen Mary

Arts & Culture · Long Beach, CA

About

The Queen Mary is a historic ocean liner from a different era, built for trans-Atlantic crossings rather than modern cruise vacations. You can explore it on a guided tour, see modern restorations, dine, or even spend the night aboard. It sits in Downtown Long Beach, where it serves as a museum and event space.

Admission is around $35, which some find steep given the limited historical exhibits. The ship looks great from the outside, and the guided tour is recommended by many. It's open 24 hours, making it flexible for visits. If you're in the area, the Aquarium of the Pacific is a nearby stop.

“Interesting place, but I was expecting more”

I was expecting more historical exhibits, like what the guest rooms might have looked like originally, but the Queen Mary doesn't have much on display. There are a few scattered exhibits, but overall the ship lacks things to see. Admission is pricey at around $35. The Queen Mary looks great from the outside, but I don't think it's worth paying to go inside.

“One of the great ships of all times.”

This fantastic ocean liner is a treasure for our city. We've enjoyed attending events here and imagining how elegant the travelers must have felt during its prime. The Spruce Goose used to be docked next to it but has since moved up north. If you're visiting, stop by, walk the decks, and try to experience a bit of history.

“A Beautiful Ship from a Different Era”

Most of us are used to the large, sleek white cruise ships of today that take us on quick trips to warm places. The Queen Mary is a beautiful ship from an older time. It was designed for crossing the Atlantic, so its layout is quite different from modern megaships. I strongly suggest a visit, and definitely take the guided tour – it's worth the extra fee.
