A giant white dog sculpture greets you in the lobby of this small but thoughtfully curated contemporary museum. It's a quiet escape from the sun, with surprising finds: Picasso canvases, a Warhol paper dress, and past exhibitions of Robert Mapplethorpe and Wayne Thibault. The sculpture garden next to the cafe is a nice spot to linger.

Free admission runs Thursdays from 4 to 8 pm. The rest of the week, it's open Friday through Sunday. The basement holds a theater and lecture hall. If you're planning a visit, check the website for special exhibitions. The shop has quirky gifts and maps of modernist Palm Springs.

“Excellent Oasis of Culture”

Size doesn't matter here. The collections are surprisingly high quality and there's a lot to take in. There's a fun sculpture garden next to the cafe. The theater and lecture hall downstairs are beautiful. The big Sam Francis piece in the lobby made me really happy. There are multiple paintings by Picasso, a Warhol paper dress, and lots of natural light and air conditioning. The gift shop has some quirky items and maps of modernist Palm Springs.

“Interesting Small Art Museum”

This art museum is quite small and doesn't compare to the big ones, but it's a nice little museum on its own. I've been several times. Earlier this year, they had an interesting special exhibition of paintings by Wayne Thiebaud. There was also a show of Robert Mapplethorpe photographs. I'm always drawn to the large white dog sculpture in the lobby. If you love art, check the museum's website for special exhibits that might interest you. It's a great place to spend a couple of quiet hours and maybe grab something to eat at their small cafe.
