About
You might expect a maritime museum to be all static displays and don't-touch signs. Nauticus flips that: it's a nonprofit discovery center where you can touch horseshoe crabs in the tank, watch hi-def films about submersibles, and even tour the massive Battleship Wisconsin docked right outside. Founded in 1994, it focuses on hands-on STEM learning through exhibits on Navy design, maritime history, and marine life. It's mixed-gaystraight and family-friendly, though the thoughtful curation appeals to adults too.
Open daily 9am-5pm (10am on Sundays), it's located near W. Main St. in downtown Norfolk. If you're also checking out local arts, the Chrysler Museum of Art is nearby and offers a very different kind of creative experience. Nauticus doesn't have a dedicated theater space, but its digital theater shows rotating films on maritime themes. Free WiFi is available throughout.
