The Mint Karaoke Lounge
Karaoke dive on Market Street
About
Since 1968, The Mint has been a karaoke dive in the Castro on Market Street. The central horseshoe bar dominates the room, making it cramped when crowded. While tagged as a gay bar, the crowd is actually quite mixed, with many straight groups. Drinks can be weak by Castro standards, but you can order sushi from the restaurant next door. Expect a wait for your turn to sing.

“Mixed feelings”
Pros: It's entertaining, and you can order sushi from the neighboring restaurant. Cons: 1. I ordered a Hot Buttered Rum but the bartender said they were out of butter. The owner went to check in the storage room, which is accessed through the restroom. That setup seems questionable and might lead to misunderstandings. I never got my drink because they had no butter. Bad for business. 2. Your turn to sing takes a long time. 3. The mic sometimes doesn't work.

“Challenging venue even if you do like karaoke”
First, it's useless to review this place unless you love karaoke bars, which I don't. But I've been dragged here several times lately, so I'm reviewing for those who go for their friends. Even if you can ignore the karaoke (possible if you position yourself right), it's still an uncomfortable venue. Despite being called a gay bar since 1968, it's mostly straight. It's filled with college drama department girls who bring a token gay friend or reluctant boyfriend. It's too crowded, and the horseshoe bar in the middle takes up too much space. Getting served is hard, and the drinks are small and weak for the neighborhood. That's a big flaw because the only way to tolerate this place is to be very drunk.

“Karaoke for the Braves”
If you love singing pop divas like Madonna and Britney, you must visit Mint to join the energetic and friendly crowd. It's also great for birthdays, but note that you'll have to wait for your turn on stage, which can take a while.
