“Great place. "Family" atmosphere!”
The crowd is mostly African-American, and there's a great jukebox with pop, jazz, old school, and blues. Regulars are generally warm and friendly. The place has AC/heat, good lighting, a retro eclectic decor with deer antlers and red lights, and reasonable prices. They offer baked personal pizzas and bar snacks if you want to sit at a table. There's a pool table and often a Spades game. The crowd is mostly mature, ages 30-60, with a loyal following. This is the best option for a gay African American person visiting the city, since Mount Vernon bars like Hippo, Central, Drinkery, and Windup Space consistently have a racial or uncomfortable vibe. Come to Gallery Bar for a good time with a diverse mix of professionals, blue-collar workers, college students, and older folks, without the drama.

“Used to be the best bar in the 70's and 80's”
When I lived in that city from 1978 to 1985, the Gallery was the place to go, and the Shipmates Bar, the back bar which was leather only, had a huge back room with a lot of sex that often spilled into the bar, and there were glory holes between the men's room and the back room. I met some of the hottest men there, including football players from the local NFL team. There was briefly another bar called Port Hole on a nearby street, but the Gallery was the top choice.

“Not Like It Used To Be!”
This bar has changed names and concepts many times over the years. It used to have a nice restaurant off and on, and I always went for their crab cakes; I'm not even sure if they still serve food. It's always been a mixed crowd that tends to lean African-American. When I visited last fall, it seemed mostly African-American, and as a white person, I felt unwelcome and out of place. It's not a favorite spot for me anymore.

“BEST PLACE FOR FRIENDS AND NEWBIES”
This is my favorite place when I'm in town. The bartenders can be a bit busy and edgy, but they make the best drinks for the price. One bartender is always smiling and cracking jokes. It's more of a bar or pub than a restaurant, and I always leave wanting more. See you soon, guys.
