Black Hart Of Saint Paul

Dancing · Piano Bar · St. Paul, MN

About

If you're looking for a dive bar that mixes soccer, drag, and piano karaoke, this is your spot. Steps from Allianz Field, Black Hart continues the legacy of the old Town House Bar as a home for the LGBTQ+ community. Events like drag shows, burlesque, BINGO, and karaoke happen on the regular, and the DJs keep the energy high. It's a gag hotspot despite being small.

The crowd leans 30s and 40s, mixed lesbian, trans-friendly, and queer. Parking can be tricky (the lot isn't owned by the bar, so watch for signs). On match days, it's packed with soccer fans. For a solo night out, the piano bar vibe makes it easy to land at the bar and chat.

Located in St. Paul's Midway area, just steps from Allianz Field.

Don't go here or give them your business, and don't park in their lot because they don't actually own it. If you get towed, they won't care. Why support a bar that doesn't care about its customers or the money you spend there if they don't care about you? When I walked in, I asked the bartender about the attendant at the gate, and he said as long as I parked where there wasn't a sign, I'd be fine. If he'd told me not to park because they didn't own the lot, I wouldn't have.

Visiting the Black Hart was a letdown. The crowd was mostly straight, including a family with a man, woman, and two kids. The bar says no minors allowed, but I saw kids inside. When I messaged the bar on social media, they called my concerns bizarre and threatening, so I made a complaint. Children have no place in our bars. Given the hostile climate toward LGBT people, the last thing we need is bars appearing to push an agenda on kids. Gross. Complete dive bar.

It's a straight sports bar, owned by progressive straight people who took over a gay bar. But it's definitely straight.

They charge $1 for a glass of water? Seriously? I'm not sure about the whole bar, but in the Piano Bar section, that's the case.

“Totally Awesome”

Lots of fun events here. Great music from the DJs. It's a bit small but a total hangout spot. Every time I come to the cities, it's where I head first. :)
