“Eastern European Commie Kitsch”
Eastern Bloc is a compact bar in the East Village, just southwest of Tompkins Square Park, with Eastern European kitsch decor, red lights everywhere, and two small video screens. I visited an hour or two before closing on a Sunday night in May 2015, and there were about ten people including the DJ and bartender, who was very friendly and also from Baltimore. There are some animal heads on the wall—look for the "goat check" specifically. It was quiet after 2 AM on a Sunday, no cover charge, and I paid $8 for a rum and coke. The crowd seemed mostly local, and there were no go-go dancers unless you count the drunk patrons. I'd probably return during a busier time.
