About
A classic dive bar that's been a fixture of the West Village since 1864, Julius' is widely recognized as the oldest continuously operating gay bar in New York City. Step inside and you'll find a laid-back pub atmosphere with wagon wheel chandeliers, a long bar, and a mix of locals ranging from their 30s to 50s. The crowd is friendly and unpretentious, regulars rave about the hamburgers, and the happy hour draws a steady group.
Things can get rowdy on Thursday nights, so plan accordingly. The full bar keeps strong drinks flowing, and there's free wifi if you need to check your phone. The bar opens at 4pm most days (noon on weekends) and stays open until 2am or 4am depending on the night.
Located in the West Village, one of NYC's most historic LGBTQ+ neighborhoods, Julius' sits on Christopher Street near the Stonewall Inn.

The best burgers in the neighborhood. In the late 80s and early 90s, when I ran a BBS called The Park, we'd meet up at Julius' monthly. We called it eye-balling because it was in-person. Great memories there. Fun crowd, strong drinks, total dive, low-key vibe.

I remember going to Julius when I visited to invite the Cambodian community to a movie at the Baha'i center in Dallas. After that activity, I took a cab to Julius. I used to live and work in Kerrville, Texas, and we'd go to Julius at least twice a month to get rowdy and have fun. Everyone was welcome regardless of race or gender. We always had a great time. Awesome music, fun crowd, great happy hour, rowdy, strong drinks.
