“Cool Bar”

I'd rate it 5 stars if the music improved and there weren't so many homophobic straight men. Aside from that, the drinks are excellent, and management ensures everyone's safety.

Update: the bar has declined further. I went up the stairs, and by the time I reached the top, I really needed that drink. Same attitude, same drugged-out queens. Anyway, off to the Airport Tavern to see how they are doing. Can I remove that one star rating? Previously: The bar is in an old building between an upper and lower street, each with an entrance. If you have trouble walking, enter from the upper street—then if you fall, it's only about 10 feet, which might not kill you. You could survive and hobble to a better bar. If you enter from the lower street, be prepared to climb a mountain, because the floors are double height and the climb is about 20 feet of narrow steps with only a wobbly handrail. Worse, when you exit the main bar to the stairwell, there's no warning that the steps are immediately inside the door at a blind corner, and a check-in stand on the landing leaves little footing before the long descent. Poor lighting, just a light at the far end of the steep tunnel. If someone fell down those steps, they'd likely be seriously injured or die. Maybe the owners only want pretty, healthy boys who can make the climb. Was the climb worth it? No—at the top was a disgruntled bartender who wouldn't give you the time unless there was a sexual motivation. Entertainment: a strung-out drag queen in a cheap polyester backwards wig gazing at the disco ball, dancing alone in circles without music. They advertise thumping music for pelvic gyrations when they should prevent pelvic fractures. How this place keeps its license without being compliant with accessibility standards amazes me, but I should have known when I saw what looked like broken wheelchair parts at the base of the upper steps. Guys, if a fire breaks out from one of those polyester wigs, don't expect help getting out. The pretty boys are self-centered, so be the first out the door, or you risk them slamming it and putting a shovel handle against the knob to keep others in. Recommendations: if entering from the upper street, bring a backpack with repelling gear; from the lower, climbing gear. Better yet, close this fire trap down.

I'm not sure the people I saw at Club Silverstone have ever been to a dance club in another city, because this place was not remotely a dance club from what I saw. First, a cover charge. I don't mind paying a cover if it's worth it (like a real dance bar with people inside). I walked down the well-lit stairs to a dark, dingy hole in the wall. The bar and decorations were one step away from an old midwestern bar in some rural state, where all the tables and chairs were made from old wooden barrels and covered in leather for cushions. No, they weren't barrels—it was just a flashback to the pleather days of the leisure suit. I arrived before midnight; maybe it doesn't get going until later. I got downstairs and there were maybe 12 people in the bar, everyone playing pool or texting on their phones. I walked around. The dance floor is like a vault, closed off from the rest of the bar with no actual bar inside the dance floor room—a dance dungeon. Not one person was even in the room of the dance floor, which isn't designed for standing around and watching. You either go in to dance or you're standing on the dance floor alone. The crowd was mostly sleeveless shirts, Justin Bieber haircuts, and lesbians playing pool. Nothing wrong with that, but I wished someone had told me it was a dyke dive before I spent $2 to walk down the stairs into this nightmare.

“the Phoenix Rises”

An eclectic mix of locals at a basement neighborhood bar with dance music, a bit reminiscent of pre-Stonewall days but without the queens. A good place to spend an evening!
