I went on a Thursday when it wasn't very crowded. From what I hear, Wednesdays and Sundays are the best days to go: Wednesday is half price and Sunday is Co-Ed, so if you're bi you might find fun with a woman or a couple or a mixed group. The place has two levels: private rooms (basically closets with a bed) and glory holes on the second floor, where the lockers are too. The bottom floor has a TV lounge, showers, restrooms, a few vending machines, plus the steam room, sauna, porn viewing area, and an enclosed patio where you can be naked outdoors without getting a public indecency citation. The place was clean but showing its age; it could use some renovation upstairs but still feels clean. I recommend bringing flip-flops. Here's the real deal about Steve's bath house in Reno. It's great if you're an out-of-shape senior citizen looking for other out-of-shape seniors. Otherwise, it's just a place to go because it's the only one in Reno. Steve's doesn't advertise locally, apparently to avoid offending homophobic locals. Amenities: a small steam room that's usually too hot; a porn video room with fences blocking sightlines; a dry sauna that was opened about a year ago and already has dark discoloration (mold?) forming on the vinyl flooring; and some glory holes on the second floor. You have to pay to rent the room with the sling, whereas almost every other bathhouse has a common area for that. You can get a locker or a tiny private room with a power outlet. Wednesday is discount day, but it attracts all the paunchy out-of-shape seniors in Reno, the same ones every week, some obnoxious—like the senile old man commenting about San Francisco while watching porn, or the Charles Bronson look-alike at 85 with Alzheimer's. Even some younger ones are obnoxious, like a late-20s guy who weighs about 300 lbs, always eating fatty fast food in the TV room, complaining he'd be more desirable in San Francisco. Bright spots: reasonably clean, safe, they provide condoms. It's better than taking chances in the park. No one hassles you, but if you expect anything better than fat boys and out-of-shape seniors, you'll be disappointed. Part of the problem is lack of promotion. The owner, Steve, gives rare interviews and has talked about past homophobic picketing. He also mentioned possibly opening to bi male/female couples, but that's unlikely. Steve is aware of amenities at better bathhouses like Steamworks in Berkeley, Watergarden in San Jose, and Steam and Hawks in Portland. Steve's doesn't compare. On a given night, maybe 10 guys circulate like a shark tank, but not much happens. Blaring, dull gay disco music plays, and dull men sometimes get lucky. Could it be better? Hard to say. Reno isn't very gay-friendly. If Steve offered discounts to guys under 25 like other clubs, there might be more eye candy, or different event nights for fetishes. But until he advertises locally, the best that can be said is it's a safe place for man-to-man sex in Reno—if you can find it.
