Sansom Street Gym

Bathhouses · Philadelphia, PA

About

Billed as a different sort of gym, Sansom Street Gym is actually a bathhouse with a sauna and private rooms. It runs 24 hours daily, but its Yelp listing notes it may be permanently closed. Reviews are mixed, with complaints about staff attitude and amenities.

The Tuesday half-priced room special is advertised on the website, but one reviewer found the staff unhelpful when trying to use it. If you're in the area, Club Philly is often mentioned as a more reliable alternative with professional attendants.

Most bathhouses have been closed or running at reduced capacity since the pandemic started, and this one was no different. I've always enjoyed myself here because it's huge with plenty of dark hallways and play areas. Since New York City is terrible for bathhouses, I decided to travel down and revisit this old favorite. I called today (July 6, 2021) and spoke to a very nice young man on the phone. He was extremely patient and helpful answering my questions and truly represented this place well. I'm looking forward to visiting soon.

It used to be nice, but now I can't relax because I have to worry about getting robbed or having my locker broken into. The dishonest cleaning staff lets in criminals through the back door. These people walk around in street clothes planning thefts, and others record you and post the videos online. Don't bring cash or valuables, and go with a friend if you can. Aside from that, there are always people to hook up with.

I'm currently here. I went to the front desk because my TV isn't working. They told me the TVs aren't working (which is a lie) because all the other room TVs are on and I checked an empty room and it worked. So even though I paid the same as everyone else, they don't seem to practice fair business. I want to know who the owner is, but until then I'll complain on every review site and to everyone I know. I even tipped the front desk guy—big mistake, huge.

I arrived on a Tuesday around 2pm. Their website says they have a half-price room special on Tuesdays. I thought it would be a good chance to check the place out and maybe come back on a weekend. When I was buzzed in, a guy who looked like he just woke up from a nap greeted me. When I asked about the special, he said it was only for members and gave me a blank stare. He said if I wasn't a member it would be $35. I told him the website says the Tuesday special for non-members is $22.50. Blank stare. I didn't want to argue or pull up my phone because I was so put off by his attitude that I didn't want to give him any money. He buzzed me out and I left. Their competitor, Club Philly, might not be the newest place, but their staff is always helpful and professional compared to this place. Take your business where they actually try.
