Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort & Spa
Resort · Honolulu, HI
About
The scent of plumeria drifts through the grand lobby, where white columns and rocking chairs on the lanai recall an era of steamer trunks and ocean liners. Built in 1901, the Moana Surfrider has anchored Waikiki as its 'Grand Hotel' ever since. Guests here are a mix of gay and straight travelers, families, and couples seeking a quieter alternative to the high-rise bustle. The hotel is pet-friendly and offers a spa, sauna, gym, and rooftop spaces. A colossal banyan tree, one of the oldest in Hawaii, shades the courtyard with a 150-foot canopy.
Don't miss the hotel's free historical tour on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 11 am. The Beachhouse restaurant serves oceanfront meals, and the second-floor gallery displays photos and brochures from Hawaii's bygone eras. For a nearby stroll, The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, shares the same stretch of Waikiki Beach.
Waikiki is Honolulu's iconic beachfront district, packed with shops, dining, and nightlife. The Moana Surfrider sits right on Waikiki Beach, steps from the surf.

“My favorite Waikiki resort”
This is my fifth visit to the Moana, and the staff has never disappointed me. It's a great escape from the busy area outside. I recommend trying the Beachhouse restaurant.

“Total class in Waikiki..”
There's nothing to dislike here if you appreciate the quality and old-fashioned charm. It's a relief to return to this hotel after the over-the-top Waikiki scene. A true slice of paradise. The review from BBUC is spot on.

“Exquisite Hotel in Waikiki”
Opened in 1901, the Moana has been a standout from the start. Throughout its history and changes, it has always remained the Grand Hotel. As you approach on Kalakaua Avenue, you see beautiful columns, a front porch with rocking chairs, and a grand lobby. The second floor has a historic area with photos and brochures from past eras. The hotel also offers a one-hour historical tour on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 11 am. Don't miss the enormous banyan tree, about 75 feet tall and 150 feet wide, one of the oldest in the islands.
