Burgundy Bed & Breakfast
Bed & Breakfast · New Orleans, LA
About
Walking through the front door of this 1890s Eastlake-style shotgun double feels like stepping back in time. Original 12-foot ceilings, plaster medallions, and pocket doors are everywhere, alongside eight non-working coal-burning fireplaces. The four-room B&B is gay-owned and operated by Carl Smith, a retired physics teacher and New Orleans native. It sits in the Marigny neighborhood, an 8-minute walk to Washington Square and close to French Quarter gay venues.
The backyard spa is a draw, though weather affects its use. Rooms are clean and spacious (the Blue Room is a guest favorite), with private baths and free WiFi. Breakfast is provided and guests often gather in the parlor or dining room. Carl communicates well before arrival and shares local tips. The area is walkable, and while some taxi drivers warn of safety, guests report no trouble day or night.
The B&B is in the Marigny neighborhood, a historic area just outside the French Quarter, known for its Creole cottages and shotgun houses. It's near St. Roch Ave., which adds to the local residential feel.

“Hidden Gem”
The owner communicates well before arrival to sort out travel and directions. He is a welcoming host who shares great tips about the city. The rooms have classic New Orleans character and were clean and spacious. I stayed in the Blue Room. The location is perfect, about a twenty-minute walk to the French Quarter, and I felt safe walking during the day and at night. I will definitely stay here again on my next trip to New Orleans.

“Very nice stay”
I stayed here while attending a conference and used a bike provided by the owner to get to and from the convention center. The room was very pleasant, breakfast was good, and the other guests were genuine and friendly. The outdoor hot tub didn't get much use because of bad weather, but the B&B is close to many gay venues. Even though taxi drivers say it's a dangerous area and advise taking a cab every time, I had no issues at all. Locals were very welcoming. I'd go back tomorrow if I could. Thank you to the owner for a nice stay.
