About

Groups of gay travelers and budget-minded beachgoers fill the Betty Doon Motor Hotel, a family-run spot in the middle of Ogunquit's gay village. The pine-paneled rooms feel like a Maine summer camp, with compact showers and creaky floorboards that add character. It's a short walk to the beach and within steps of local shops and bars. Rick the owner keeps things casual and clean.

The hotel opened before 1941 as a restaurant, later converted into 21 rooms, suites, and apartments. Rooms 5-9 sit above a store, so early risers will hear floorboards creaking by 8 am. Free WiFi and parking come standard. Rates stay budget-friendly, though some may find the dated setup less luxurious. Check the office hours before arriving, as front desk closes earlier on Fridays.

“Kitschy and Fabulous!”

My four friends and I spent two nights at this charming small hotel right in the center of the gay-friendly area of Ogunquit, very close to the lovely beach. The Betty Doon might be a bit outdated, but in a fun and quirky way. The owner and operator was extremely kind. Our room was clean but not fancy, with two queen beds and a twin, plus a large bathroom and plenty of closet space. One piece of advice: avoid rooms 5 through 9 if you plan on sleeping in, because the store upstairs opens at 8 AM and the creaky floorboards will disturb your sleep.
