“Try a Stay in Lower Manhattan”
I had a free night award from a hotel loyalty program that was about to expire at the end of April. I called the program's customer service to claim it, and the agent found me a room at Aloft in the Financial District. I was curious because I'd never stayed in Lower Manhattan before, as I usually stay in Midtown, so I saw it as an adventure. I visited on a weekend, which meant the subway had a different schedule—only the 2 or 3 trains went to Fulton Street, not the A or C. I suggest using the MTA Weekender app to manage weekend service changes. I didn't realize the A train had been rerouted until I noticed the stations didn't match the map. I stayed calm, got off at the next stop, and took an Uber. The area around the hotel seemed somewhat empty, with Ann Street quiet and a lot of scaffolding. The streets were narrow, and while I felt safe, I was conscious of being alone. The front desk service was excellent; I was greeted upon arrival and mentioned I'd tried to check in via the mobile app but it didn't work. The clerk said it was probably due to the award reservation and showed me how to use mobile key, which I loved using for the first time. The room was typical Aloft—contemporary with dark gray features, pixelated color pops, and space-saving designs. It was small, but that's typical for New York, not a complaint. The sleeping area was barely larger than the king bed and a small desk with chair. A small entryway between the sleeping area and the sink/shower/toilet area made the room feel larger. The bathroom area was spacious enough, but sharing it with someone else could be tricky. The location was convenient—the subway was about a block and a half away, and there was a 24-hour CVS a block away. Despite being in the Financial District, there were plenty of conveniences like coffee shops, restaurants, and stores. Since it was an award night, the price was right, but the agent warned me that if I didn't cancel and didn't show up, I'd be charged over $400. The high cost of New York keeps me from visiting often, but I was lucky to have a nice weekend there.
