About

The torn couches and dated paint job set the scene inside this shabby 24th Street cafe. It's the original Philz Coffee location, where every cup is brewed individually by a barista who controls the flavor — no lattes or cappuccinos here. The crowd is genuinely mixed, drawing hippies, hipsters, queers, straights, and yuppies alike. Coffee is the star: the Ether and Arabic Turkish are standouts, and you'll want to grab a warm cinnamon bun too.

This is the spot that launched an artisan coffee empire, and the interior looks the part — grungy and unpretentious. The Sunday hours are tight, just 6am to 7am per Yelp, so plan accordingly. If you're exploring the Mission, you can grab a scoop a few blocks away at Bi-Rite Creamery after your coffee.

Features

“Philz' way”

Philz offers a unique coffee experience unlike any other. Their menu and specialties might take some time to get used to—I still haven't mastered it fully—but exploring it is definitely worthwhile. They don't serve lattes or cappuccinos, and you can't add cocoa, sugar, or artificial sweeteners to their drinks; the barista controls the coffee's flavor, though you can choose whether you want light, medium, or dark cream and sugar. I'd recommend the Ether, which is rich and dark, and their Arabic Turkish, which has a smokier taste.

“Great Place”

Outstanding coffee brewed one cup at a time! The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with a diverse crowd that includes hippies, hipsters, queer folks, straight people, yuppies, and more. The pastries are excellent too—try the warm cinnamon bun on your next visit. It's well worth stopping by in the mornings on your commute.
