It's noisy and casual, with outdoor seating available. The happy hour deals are solid. Sunday hours start at 8am. You can make reservations.

Went for a family dinner. A cockroach ran across our table and touched a plate. The bathrooms were extremely dirty with what seemed like feces on the walls. The food was slightly undercooked but edible. Service was very slow and staff had a rude, attitude-filled manner. If you enjoy roaches and poor conditions, go ahead; for us, it was too disgusting to return.

More than a year ago, I had the bad luck of going to this place as a straight non-white man in the capital. I was embarrassed and treated like a fool in front of the other customers, who were all white. I had checked into my hotel 30 minutes earlier and asked for nearby food recommendations; they suggested Annie's. I walked three blocks in 34-degree weather, sat down, and asked to order. They refused, claiming I was drunk, which I was not. When I asked why, they said I had stumbled on the way in and decided I was drunk. I was shocked and humiliated as nearby tables heard everything. I knew causing a scene would get the police called, so I waited a few minutes and told the waitress she was out of line as I left. I told the hotel, and they followed up since I was a top-tier loyalty member. Judge for yourself: was this racism, reverse discrimination because it's a popular gay spot, or because I looked poor?

I've been visiting Washington D.C. for over 15 years, and Annie's is always my first stop. They serve a great variety of comfort food in a warm, relaxing atmosphere. Each visit feels like a family reunion.
