About
What sets Cafe Berlin apart from other German restaurants in D.C. is its owner's personal story: a former Hill staffer and server now runs the place with her German husband/chef. The kitchen staffs only chefs brought from Germany, so the traditional dishes are authentically prepared but with a lighter touch. Located in Capitol Hill since 1985, it occupies the ground floor of three joined townhouses, with front yards serving as patios for outdoor dining. The interior features a small bar and two prettily decorated dining rooms, avoiding the kitschy decor common in stateside German spots.
Weekday afternoons are quieter, but reservations are encouraged (you can book via OpenTable). The bar pours a rotating selection of imported German beers and wines alongside cocktails. Desserts are all in-house, with at least ten options nightly including apple strudel and black forest cake. The crowd includes politicians, congressional staffers, neighborhood regulars, and tourists. Note that the patio is dog friendly and the restaurant offers free wifi. For another excellent European-inspired meal nearby, try Jaleo .
Cafe Berlin has a mixed gay-straight crowd, so it's welcoming to all.
Cafe Berlin is located in Capitol Hill, a historic neighborhood near Union Station and the U.S. Capitol, drawing politicians, staffers, and tourists.

Arrived at the restaurant around 4pm on a Thursday. The courtyard was empty except for one person on a laptop. We were asked inside if we had a reservation. Since the courtyard was empty aside from that person, I assumed reservations were required regardless. I used my phone to book one via a reservation app, then told the server I had made a reservation. As we headed back outside, the person on the laptop scolded me, saying I didn't need to make a reservation and that I was costing them money. That person turned out to be the manager or owner, a woman named Clytie, who was very rude. She could have greeted us politely or explained that reservations aren't necessary on the spot. Instead, she acted as if I had intentionally harmed her business. She prioritized a small booking fee over a potential $80-$90 dinner. We left. I don't tolerate poor service. I wonder if this was racially motivated. I dine out often and have never been treated so badly. When I responded to her inconsiderate remarks, she sarcastically shouted 'God bless you! God bless you!' I will never return. There's no excuse for rudeness to customers unless they disrupt service. This manager clearly doesn't value her patrons.

“German Food? Who Knew!”
This very gay friendly German restaurant in the heart of Capital hill not only has the fantastic selection of beers you would expect, but a wonderful menu. Everything from the traditional German food (all the sausages) to their take on chicken cordon bleu, plus a rotating seasonal menu. When the weather is nice, the patio seating is a lovely place to eat, relax, and see neighbors out for date night. But save room for dessert. The chefs are serious; they don't just have one or two desserts plus a sorbet—they have at least ten different homemade cakes, tarts, pies, and puddings every night. Bad for your waistline but excellent for a night out!
