Lauriol Plaza
Latin Spanish · Mexican · Washington, DC
About
In Dupont Circle, Lauriol Plaza has been a staple since 1983, serving Tex-Mex and Latin American dishes in a spacious, upscale setting. The rooftop patio is a highlight, and the restaurant donates a portion of earnings to HIV, cancer, and Children's National Hospital—a win for your night out. The crowd is a mix of locals and groups, and the full bar keeps margaritas flowing.
Food is more about quantity and fun than authenticity; reviewers praise the lamb fajitas with mint jelly and the Mar y Tierra. Service handles the multi-floor layout well, even during busy happy hours. Reservations are accepted, and dogs are welcome on the patio. For a change of pace, nearby Jaleo offers Spanish tapas if you're craving something different.
Lauriol Plaza is located in Dupont Circle, a lively D.C. neighborhood known for its nightlife and LGBTQ-friendly bars.

“Expensive and Not authentic mexican food”
Service is extremely slow. The food is Tex-Mex, not authentic Mexican, and it's pricey. They also charge five dollars for parking. The venue itself is nice.

The lamb fajitas with a bit of mint jelly and all the sides are wonderful. I always order a margarita on the rocks with salt.

Over a year ago, it was fantastic. I ordered the Mar y Tierra, which came with three huge bacon-wrapped shrimp and two bacon-wrapped filet mignons with vegetables. It was delicious.

“Better for Socializing”
Lauriol Plaza has several positives. The building is huge, the drinks are good, and the service is surprisingly efficient given all the different floors and tables they manage. The only potential issue is if you're a true fan of traditional Mexican food; this isn't what you'd find at a small family-owned spot in Texas or California. However, the food is decent enough, and the atmosphere is designed for a fun night out with friends, where you can see hundreds of others doing the same.
