About

The griddle sizzles behind the counter, and the air smells like bacon at any hour. South Street Diner is a 24-hour landmark one block from South Station, serving classic American breakfast and sandwiches without pretense. It's a straight-friendly spot where Ivy Leaguers argue philosophy next to Southie locals after last call. The place is small and loud, so expect a wait unless you arrive before midnight or after 4 AM. Regulars swear by the chocolate chip french toast and blueberry pancakes. If you're catching an early bus or ferry, this is your move.

Located in Boston's South End neighborhood, just off South Street and a block from South Station.

“Great late or early spot!”

This is a classic, no-frills diner with a grill right behind the counter. It's great for a burger or breakfast after drinking, with a real diner feel. The space is small, so expect to wait unless you come very early, before midnight or after 4 am.

“24 Hour Diner in Leather District”

Near South Station, this tiny diner is a decent spot for a quick meal. By the end of the night, it's not the cleanest place, but service is fast and the menu has typical diner food you'll enjoy if that's your thing.

“Club kids, cops, commuters, Chinatown employees, late night dinners, travellers, truckers, taxi cab drivers”

My first meal upon arriving in Boston was at this very no-frills diner. I had come from Indiana, evacuating from New Orleans to attend UMass Boston. The food was exactly what I needed, and the waiter almost refused to take my money. It's not fine dining—it was loud, and the food was exactly what diner food should be. There are loud conversations ranging from pretentious Ivy League chatter to local southside arguments. But this is where highbrow and lowbrow mix, especially late at night when everyone's hungry and nobody's eating foie gras.

“Boston's friendliest 24 hour Diner”

The chocolate chip french toast and blueberry pancakes filled us up nicely at this diner just one block from South Station. We needed to spend several hours between our bus arrival and the ferry to the Cape. We arrived around 4:30-5 AM, and a very friendly waitress greeted us and told us to sit anywhere. She was extremely kind, even giving us walking directions and advice for exploring the city! The food and her warm service really hit the spot.
