Bar: Full bar

Downtown Raleigh's Warehouse District is home to The Pit, where authentic whole-hog, pit-cooked barbecue is the star. Pitmaster Ed Mitchell once beat Bobby Flay on Food Network in a rib showdown. The atmosphere is more upscale than your typical barbecue joint, with exposed brick and a lively bar.

They serve classic North Carolina whole-hog barbecue alongside excellent Southern soul food sides. Full bar, outdoor seating, and happy hour make it a popular spot after work. Claim your reservation online — it gets busy on weekends. If you're exploring other local spots, Irregardless Cafe is another nearby gem for a different vibe.

“Smack your lips!!”

This place serves excellent Southern soul food with tender smoked meats. The head pitmaster once beat Bobby Flay in a Food Network rib competition. The ribs here are the best I have ever tasted. The restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere and feels much more upscale than you'd expect from a Southern barbecue spot.
