About
In Mobile's Downtown Historic District, the Mobile Carnival Museum traces Mardi Gras back to its true birthplace. Housed in a restored historic home, it features fourteen galleries filled with bejeweled royal robes, crowns, and scepters worn by actual carnival monarchs. Five video presentations explain the traditions. It's a one-of-a-kind look at the oldest Mardi Gras in the country.
You can take a guided tour for behind-the-scenes details or explore on your own. The Little Mystics Den lets kids become costumed float riders. The museum rents for events up to 600 people, and Toomey's Gift Shoppe sells throws and souvenirs. It's open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9am to 4pm.
