Walking into The Joe Jefferson Playhouse, you're stepping into a piece of Mobile history that began in 1947 when locals launched the Joe Jefferson Players to revive the city's theater scene. Named for the 19th-century actor famous as Rip Van Winkle, this community theater has weathered hurricanes and financial storms to keep live performance alive. Membership once hit 2000, and the playhouse expanded in 1967 to accommodate demand. Today it remains a staple of Mobile's arts scene, run by the same volunteer-driven organization.
