Founded in 1969 by the City of Oakland, it houses over 1.9 million objects exploring California's character and identity. The museum's collections span seminal artworks, historical artifacts, ethnographic objects, natural specimens, and photographs. Its three Californian galleries rotate exhibitions that examine the state's landscapes, migrations, and culture.
Note that OMCA is currently closed temporarily. When open, hours vary: Wednesday-Thursday 11am-5pm, Friday 11am-9pm, Saturday-Sunday 11am-5pm. Free WiFi is available. For another cultural stop, check out The Fox Theater nearby.
