Grammy Museum (Closed Temporarily)

“Pretty cool Museum for Downtown LA, part of LA LIVE”

This was my first visit and I found it really impressive. The museum has four floors; the ground floor is mostly for entry, but the upper three levels are packed with Grammy memorabilia and displays about the origins of various music genres. There's a section devoted to Michael Jackson, along with many outfits worn by past and present stars. Interactive sound booths let you explore mixing, sound engineering, and music production. One small room tracks the evolution of music listening, from phonographs to modern surround sound, which I especially enjoyed. The Clive Davis Theater seats over 100 people and is available for private events. A large exhibit covers the 1960s, featuring The Doors, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. They also display letters from celebrities, including ones Joplin wrote to her family about leading a simple life and the challenges of fame. Her yearbook is there too, showing how ordinary she looked back then. Parking nearby is expensive: the first two hours cost $5 at the attached LA Live garage, but every half hour after that adds another $5, with a daily max of $25.
