“I'm still looking for a good Denver bar...”

I've been to this bar three times and every visit is the same: bartenders who seem too lazy to work, people in their late twenties wearing makeup to look younger, and (on karaoke night) straight people getting drunk and loud. I've consistently encountered individuals who looked like they were on drugs or possibly homeless. Denver seems to have two types of bars: snobby, pretentious wannabe queens or drug-addled street trash. Can anyone recommend a bar with friendly service, normal people to talk to, and the possibility of a hookup without feeling harassed? Does that exist here?

“Charlies is not SAFE”

If you're visiting for spring break in 2016, be aware that Charlie's is considered the most unsafe gay bar in Denver. Security there won't protect you. There have been recent police incidents at Charlie's, including meth possession, illegal weapon possession, four assaults, thefts, and car thefts. For your safety, avoid this place. Just last month, February 2016, here are the crimes confirmed by Denver Police: on 2/22/16, meth and weapon possession at 9:10 PM (incident #2016114342); on 2/21/16, an assault at 12:15 AM (incident #2016110129); on 2/13/16, larceny at 11:50 PM (incident #20166001530); on 2/11/16, auto theft at 11:30 PM (incident #201693176); and on 2/3/16, theft/larceny at 11:45 PM (incident #20166001644). Charlie's management ignores that they're violating standard business practices to keep customers safe by erasing security footage, deleting social media reviews, and refusing to respond when Fox31Denver's Heidi Hemmat politely asked about their failing restaurant report card. Charlie's is a bar you should definitely avoid. When valid complaints are made to Denver Police, health inspectors, and on review sites, management ignores them and continues running their business poorly as usual.

If you're looking for country dancing and cowboys, you'll be disappointed. Charlie's has lost its identity and its customers. Go somewhere else.

“This is a Great Review”

After being a regular for 20 years, I was assaulted at Charlie's last April. The bar ignored the attack. When Denver Police got involved, they conveniently replaced their security system, so the footage of my assault was lost. That's bad business according to standard bar and nightclub security practices and police expectations. Also, management clearly doesn't take pride in their own gay bar. For example, on June 21, 2015, which was Pride Sunday, after their 4 AM after-hours party, Charlie's was too lazy to clean their bathrooms for customers who chose to drink there before the 40th Annual Pride Parade. Charlie's competitors hire professional cleaning companies to thoroughly clean bathrooms in the early morning hours when venues are closed. No wonder a competitor was chosen to host the annual Pride pool party. In recent years, Charlie's got an F on their restaurant report card for ten critical violations, including dead and alive cockroaches, rodent droppings, and many small flying insects in bottles of Vermouth, Wild Turkey, and Highland Park whisky. There were also food and debris buildup on soda guns, walls, various ice machines, and hard floors. Management refused to comment when asked by Fox 31. Charlie's management ignores that they're breaking all the rules in many business practices to protect customers by erasing video, deleting social media reviews, and refusing to answer questions about their failing restaurant report card when politely asked by Fox31Denver's Heidi Hemmat. Charlie's is a bar you should definitely avoid. When valid complaints are made to Denver Police, health inspectors, and on review sites, management ignores them and continues doing bad business as usual.
