The Baton Show Lounge
Comedy · Chicago, IL
About
Some of the best drag in Chicago has been happening at this River North staple for over 50 years. The Baton Show Lounge draws bachelorette parties and mixed-gay-straight crowds for female impersonation shows that range from brunch to late night. The vibe is lively but gets mixed reviews on service and performer attitude.
Seats near the stage put you close to the action, but reserving ahead is a smart move. There's a 2-drink minimum, and the constant tipping pressure can add up. If you go, many regulars suggest grabbing a drink nearby first.
It's in Chicago's River North neighborhood, close to other gay bars like Sidetrack and Roscoe's Tavern.

“Not particularly great.”
I visited last week with my ex. We were seated in front of the stage. My ex had never been to a drag show, so a friend suggested this place. The price was steep and requiring a two-drink minimum seemed unnecessary to me — if service is good and drinks are well-made, people will order them anyway. The show itself was just okay, but some performers' body language toward us was unsettling. A few wouldn't come to our side of the stage. One performer, called Chilli Peppers, was rude to us, staring and muttering about my ex. We were just watching and clapping when appropriate. I think maybe it was because my ex looked like a big mountain man from out of town, or because we were the only guys among many bachelorette party women. Regardless, the hostility from Chilli Peppers toward the end was appalling. I will never go back and will tell others to avoid this place. Mimi and Angel were great to watch and clearly love performing. The others — I've seen better drag at local bars. The decor was fine and the music was tasteful. Unless you want to see Angel or Mimi up close, save your time and money.

“sucks all about ripping customer off”
I paid a high cover charge, sat down, saw one performer, and was told the show was over. Nowhere was it posted that the show was ending, and I still had to pay for a two-drink minimum for what amounted to a five-minute show. This place is terrible, and so was the service.

“Great Drag Shows”
This place has been around for ages. The shows are really great. I went before and had a genuinely good time. However, the service is poor — you practically have to beg for a drink. Would I go back? Definitely! LOL

“Comedic Drag with mixed seriousness = EXPENSIVE”
It's fun to go with friends. Usually you need a reservation and to buy tickets in advance. Drinks are expensive, and there's constant pressure to tip the drag queens. It can get pretty pricey for only okay entertainment.

“Baton is fun”
Baton can be a fun club for watching drag shows. I usually have a pretty good time here. The entertainment is excellent and the female impersonators are very skilled. The only downside is that service can be lacking. I had to wait a while for drinks because waiters were busy chatting in corners and around the bar station. Overall, it's a fun place.
