Blue Moon is the Pittsburgh dive that launched Sharon Needles and Alaska Thunder Fuck onto RuPaul's Drag Race. Drag shows happen every Saturday at 11 PM with no cover (unless it's a fundraiser). Wednesday's open stage gives new performers a shot at $100 cash. Friday karaoke, hosted by EddieOke, keeps the place packed.
Happy hour draws a friendly, mixed crowd. It's small, it gets smoky, and the bartenders free-pour strong drinks. Cash or credit accepted. You might want to grab a spot at Cattivo down the street for another round afterward.

Blue Moon is the best spot for drag shows! This small venue launched the careers of two famous queens. It's tiny and gets packed but is a blast. Great music, fun crowd, excellent happy hour, long lines, strong drinks, total dive bar.

I love the happy hour and the back room. The singing and karaoke are so much fun. It's a safe space for gay and lesbian people.

“Had a great time”
I visited with my partner over Labor Day weekend in 2013. We found plenty of parking nearby. Smoking is allowed inside, so it was very smoky; we don't smoke and would have preferred a smoke-free environment, but that's rare in Pittsburgh bars. It was packed, but everyone was super friendly. The bartender served us quickly and the drinks were well-made with free pours. I went mainly for Friday karaoke, hosted by a popular gay karaoke host. I sang four songs. This bar is also the home bar of two RuPaul's Drag Race contestants, with their photos above the stage along with others. The crowd is diverse in age, race, and background, which adds to the fun. The place isn't fancy, but it's entertaining.
