About

Bronx Pizza was the first pizza-by-the-slice joint in San Diego, opening in 1997. Owner Nicky, a Calabrian native who lived in Brooklyn, brought authentic thin-crust NY-style pizza here. It's cash-only, cheap, and quick — no frills, no credit cards. The vibe is pure New York: you order decisively or get passed over.

Located in Hillcrest, it's walkable to many bars. Crowds form at peak times, but you can call ahead for a whole pie. Outdoor seating is available. For a quick, quality slice, it's hard to beat.

“Love the New York style (pizza and service)”

If you're not dealing with it every day, it can be amusing to get the brisk 'New York' service while grabbing excellent pizza by the slice near Urban Mo's or Fiesta Cantina and next to the always-open taco spot La Posta. Don't try to pay by check or card, and don't hesitate over your choice or you might get skipped as the staff takes the next person's order. The previous owner rarely appears now, but he used to have great one-liners, like when a customer asked what they call a pizza with tomato and he replied, 'We call that tomato.' The food itself keeps people coming back, and a slice or two offers great value for a quick bite.

“Cash only”

The cash-only policy might help you leave any attitude behind. Good pizza served quickly and simply. It can get busy, so plan ahead and be polite. I like their whitestone pizza, or whatever they call it. For more than two people, it's better to order a whole fresh pizza. Either call ahead or be prepared to wait.

“Best slice in SD”

I used to stop by Bronx for a slice or two every few weeks when I lived in San Diego. It has a total New York feel: no fuss, just good, quality pizzas.
