Mesh

About
Inside Mesh on Mass Ave, the slick interior of soft high-back chairs and plexiglass benches glowing with multicolored light feels more SOMA lounge than Indianapolis pub. This upscale eatery serves American, European, and Italian cuisine, attracting a mixed gay-straight crowd. The space is good for groups, though some find the vibe a bit pretentious. Thursday nights bring half-priced martinis, a carryover from the Scholar's Inn days. Those martinis score a solid 7 out of 10 for creativity and quality, according to one regular. The beer selection, however, is overpriced even by Mass Ave standards.
If upscale dining isn't your speed, nearby Henry's Coffee Bistro offers a more casual spot. Note that reviews are mixed: the venue earned a fourth star for supporting local business, but drinks can be uneven. All in all, Mesh offers a distinctive, if occasionally polarizing, night out.
Mesh is located in the Mass Ave district, known for its arts and dining scene.

I'm unsure if this place is actually a gay bar, but it reopened as Mesh on Massachusetts Avenue. The martinis on Thursday (half price) are quite good, maybe a 7/10 for creativity and quality. Beer was overpriced even for that area. The atmosphere is nice but not as creative as Scholar's first version and better than the ugly red second version. For upscale places, I prefer The Ball and Biscuit. I'll give it another try, even if pretentious places aren't needed; supporting local business earns it a fourth star. It closed in April 2010. On my Thursday visit, it seemed like a gay bar. The martinis were strong enough that I'd have had more if my friend didn't have an early workday. The exterior looks like a pub/hotel, but inside it's a swanky lounge with soft chairs and colorful plexiglass. I'll likely return on a future Indianapolis trip.
