“Great meeting place for the masses”

My partner and I were honored to take part in the major marches during the 80s. We attended two of them, and the crowds were huge and deeply moving; the quilt display was an emotional experience for everyone. We've also gone at other times with family or by ourselves; it's a wonderful place to walk, sit, and appreciate the beauty around you.

“The Heart of Our Nation's Capital”

The National Mall isn't really an institution in the sense of being a building, but it is an institution in a figurative way because it is the heart of the nation's capital. As we get ready for our National Equality March in DC in October 2009, we should recognize how beautiful and important the Mall is to all of us. It's mostly a grassy area bordered roughly by Constitution Avenue to the north, 1st Street to the east, Independence Avenue to the south, and 14th Street to the west. Stand on the Mall, look east and you'll see the impressive US Capitol, look west and you'll see the Washington Monument. I've watched Fourth of July fireworks while sitting on the grass here, had picnics with friends, and attended free summer concerts. The Mall belongs to all of us, and it's fitting that we'll be marching here for what we believe.
