It helped that my partner's sister worked there at the time and got us a tour and a ride on the special rail connecting the Capitol to the Russell Senate building. The rotunda was very impressive, and stepping onto the Senate floor was amazing. She arranged for an aide to give us a private tour. We felt very privileged. I wish she still worked there.

“Most Recognizable Building in D. C.”

The west side of the U.S. Capitol is one of the most famous sights in Washington, D.C., and possibly worldwide. A smaller version was finished in the early 1800s, but British troops burned it during the War of 1812. It was rebuilt by 1819, then expanded for another fifty years. The Senate and House galleries are open to the public when Congress is meeting, which is very interesting. You can request gallery tickets from your senators or representative. For me, the rotunda and Statuary Hall are the most beautiful parts of the Capitol. Entry is free and first-come, first-served. There is security screening like at an airport, and no large bags or backpacks are allowed. This is one of the most fascinating places in Washington, and I strongly recommend visiting.
