The first thing you notice is its sheer height — 555 feet — making it the tallest structure in the city. Opened in 1888, it was the world's tallest at the time. This obelisk on the National Mall has also served as a gathering point for LGBTQ+ rights marches, including events in the 1980s and more recent years. Currently closed temporarily, so check before planning a visit.

“Come on everybody let's make HISTORY!”
Let's all come together and make history! I'll be there. The event is on Sunday, June 11 from 10am to 6pm in Washington DC. I'm going and bookmarking this. In solidarity with the Women's March on DC, I'm suggesting that the LGBTQ+ community, along with friends and family, gather in DC on June 11, 2017 to make our voices heard by the current administration.

“Wonderful spire”
We've been to this site many times, including for marches on Washington in the 80s and again a few years ago. The stairs are now closed for safety, so the elevator is the only way up, and you should expect a long line.

“Tallest Structure in D. C.”
At 555 feet, the Washington Monument is the tallest building in Washington, D.C. It may not seem huge compared to modern skyscrapers, but when it opened in 1888, it was the tallest in the world. I've visited several times, and each time there were long lines, so be ready to wait.
