Open from 3pm on weekdays and as early as noon on Saturdays, The Rail is a historic Hillcrest bar that doubles as a daytime spot. Claimed as San Diego's first gay bar, it opened in the 1930s and has been family-owned for over 55 years. The space blends modern furnishings with brick and wood details, plus an inviting outdoor patio.
Inside you'll find a dance floor, pool table, and a kitchen serving brunch and lunch until early evening. The crowd skews 20s to 30s, and themed nights draw specific crowds — Sabado En Fuego on Saturdays and Trivia Thursdays are regulars. “Don’t waste your time!!!?”
First time visiting and the bartender gave me my drink, but when I handed him $20 for a $9 drink, he dropped my change onto the bar where some alcohol had spilled. I found that incredibly rude and called him out on it. I'm a veteran and don't take disrespect lightly. This will be my first and last time here. The bartender was unpleasant and dishonest. Now I understand why the business is struggling. Despite paying a $5 cover, I'd rather leave. Not worth it. After talking to management, I got no apology. This isn't a place to bring friends or family because the treatment will embarrass you. Avoid this place. It's dying. To be fair, the owner did offer me a free drink to make up for it.

“Nice Place For A Dance And A Nosh”
This spot was pretty nice, featuring a good dance floor and some tasty comfort food. We had a great time on a Thursday night.

“Oldie, not always a goodie”
Just like the black-painted railing around the sidewalk seating, this old bar has lost some of its shine over the years. It still draws certain ethnic crowds on specific nights and gets packed like any other 5th Avenue bar during events like the city festival or big gay celebrations, but most evenings the dance floor is empty, showing how the disco crowd has moved to other bars over time.
