About

Bar: Full bar

Hillcrest Brewing Company bills itself as the world's first gay brewery, and it lives up to the title with a casual, mixed vibe and a 15-foot beer chandelier. The spot opened in 2012 alongside the giant Pride Flag at the corner of Normal and University, making that block a landmark for queer San Diego. It's part of the Mo's Universe restaurant group, so expect the same welcoming energy as its sibling spots.

You can grab a seat on the larger-than-average patio and order stone oven thin crust pizza or salads. The tap list features nine of their own microbrews plus 16 local guest beers. It's dog friendly outdoors, and happy hour runs daily. If you're looking for more bar food, regulars have noted they'd love a few more snack options beyond the pizza and salads.

“best brewery”

Tonight the food, service, beer, and music were all excellent. I strongly suggest visiting and ordering the Sissy Shrimp pizza. This is the most welcoming restaurant I've encountered in San Diego.

“Newest member of Mo's/Baja/Gossip family”

Hillcrest Brewing Company, promoted as the first gay-owned microbrewery, opened at the best possible moment. It launched while Urban Mo's, Baja Betty's, and Gossip Grill were all thriving, and right when San Diego renamed the nearby Blaine Avenue to Harvey Milk Street and set up a huge Pride Flag at Normal and University. No block in the country felt more queer than that one in June 2012. The Mo's free trolley quickly added a stop there, so people could easily grab their signature craft beers and square pizzas while moving between bars. It's a casual, mixed crowd spot with a bigger patio than most. One thing I'd like to see: more bar snacks like mixed nuts or chips. The pizzas and salads are good, but still...
