Jimmy Carter's Mexican Cafe
Mexican · San Diego, CA
About
What sets Jimmy Carter's Mexican Cafe apart from other Mexican restaurants in San Diego is its owner, a fourth-generation San Diegan who still works the room in a Hawaiian shirt. This Hillcrest spot has been serving authentic Mexican cuisine since 1991, using fresh ingredients and handmade sauces. It's known for being extremely gay-friendly, with a family atmosphere that welcomes everyone.
The location adds to its appeal: it's directly across from Park Manor Suites and a block from The Caliph. That means the crowd skews queer, and breakfasts after popular bar nights can be as cruisy as evenings. Prices are reasonable, portions are big, and there's a full bar with local microbrews. The vibe is casual, and reservations are accepted.

“Mexican food with a touch of gay”
Like the location of another venue near Hillcrest, this place benefits from the cruising scene, which improves what is otherwise standard but reasonably priced Mexican food. Since Jimmy Carter's sits right across from the very gay Park Manor Suites and only a block from the mature gay dive bar The Caliph, the number of gay people in this part of Bankers Hill is often high enough to crash dating apps. Breakfasts after busy bar nights can be just as cruising-focused as the evenings, similar to that other spot in Hillcrest.

“Wonderful Small Restaurant!”
I've dined here twice and both times I was greeted and treated like family. Very trans and gay friendly, with a family atmosphere. The prices are fair, and the portions are huge! I could only finish half my burrito!
