Pittsburgh's Carnegie Museum of Art is arguably the first museum of modern art in the United States, founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1895. While other museums collected old masters, Carnegie bought works from his contemporary art exhibitions, building a collection that includes American art from the late 19th century, French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, and European decorative arts. You'll also find the Heinz Architectural Center, opened in 1993, which holds the largest collection of architectural plaster casts in America. The Hall of Sculpture, modeled after the Parthenon's interior, is a must-see.

Part of the larger Carnegie Museums complex, you can easily visit the adjacent Carnegie Museum of Natural History with its famous dinosaur fossils. The museum is open daily except Tuesday, with extended hours on Thursday until 8pm. Free WiFi is available. It's a welcoming space for LGBTQ visitors, located in the Oakland neighborhood.
