Tapa's Lanai Bar

“Cheap, nice breezes but no scenery”

Tapa's is an upstairs lanai bar where you can appreciate the tropical breezes, especially if you've been drinking. It's next to a restaurant I'd like to try sometime. There's a seating area with tables, high tops, stools, and two video screens. I visited around midnight on a Thursday and found a mixed but quiet crowd. The lanai overlooks an alley, but I didn't notice any bad smells. I paid $4.50 for a rum and coke. The bartender was friendly, but the security guard yelled at me for trying to exit through the restaurant door. I'm not sure if I'd return.

“Friendly bar”

I went on a Sunday afternoon and found plenty of friendly staff and customers greeting me. There were over a dozen people there at 2:30pm. They didn't have food available, so I left.

“Really friendly bartender and customers”

I visited on a November afternoon in 2010; it's the only gay bar I checked out in Waikiki. It's really nice. The bartender and customers were all friendly. I stayed for two hours and fell in love with the place. I'm planning to move to Hawaii and would go there often.

“Fortunate find.”

I found Tapa's by accident since it was the closest bar to my hotel when I arrived. Only locals were there, which is a good sign. The drinks are creative, reasonably priced, and strong; the jukebox is decent; and the place is fairly soundproof, so you can sit at the bar or on the lanai without suffering if someone is badly singing karaoke. I just moved here and it's my new favorite pub. The staff is friendly and mercilessly teases the regulars.

“Off the Beaten path”

Not really a tourist spot; it's in Waikiki behind Fusions, a good local hangout with friendly staff. It's small but great for hanging with friends or meeting new people. Prices are reasonable for Hawaii, and not many tourists there.
