The Ice Palace

Dancing · Nightclub · Cherry Grove, NY

About

You'll hear the music before you see the door. The Ice Palace bills itself as the longest running LGBTQ+ club in the world, and it carries that history with a worn-in, anything-goes energy. Drag shows, DJ sets, underwear events, and a clothing-optional swimming pool all share space here. The crowd is mixed across age groups, and the hours run overnight every day from 8am to 4am.

Reviews are mixed. Some guests love the performers and the Miss Fire Island Pageant. Others complain about loud drag shows, inattentive bartenders, and maintenance issues. It's a polarizing spot, but for those who want a no-holds-barred party on Fire Island, this is a landmark that delivers at its best.

“IS A MAGICAL PLACE FABB DRINKS! LOVELY BOYS & GIRLS~~”

I love the music, the mix of people, the performers, and the Miss Fire Island pageant! They should run later ferries so people can stay until at least 2am. And Ariel Sinclair is fun!

“Tired, Still Broken, and Unbearably Loud Drag”

This place should have burned down with the hotel. There are leaks everywhere, including behind the bar. Peeling paint is everywhere, probably from the awful screeching they call a drag show. They were supposed to make lunch for 40 men (burgers and hot dogs) at noon, but the grills weren't lit until 2pm. And more drag during lunch? Yes! The divas performing here need to be retired and learn that no matter how loud they turn up their amps, the world doesn't revolve around them. We left this place on Friday and again on Saturday because of the unbearably loud performance. I go to clubs/bars to meet people, and I can't do that over an obnoxious drag queen at 150db. The guys with me, about 40 total, all left the Ice Palace mid-day and went to another venue instead, where drag can't get past the front door.

“The bartenders need hospitality training!”

The bartenders seemed to ignore me and weren't attentive. It took too long to get their attention for a drink. One bartender was very unfriendly. The crowd was mixed and diverse. On a good night this place might be fun, but it wasn't when I was there.

It's been over a year since the Grove Hotel was destroyed by fire, and this club is right next to it. I'm surprised the fire department didn't condemn the whole complex.

“New Guy on Block”

I'll have a better review once I actually go, but I've heard positive things about it.
