Silver Dollar Saloon
Silver Dollar Saloon
About
A low-key cowboy joint with drag shows and two-stepping, Silver Dollar Saloon is San Antonio's country-western gay bar. Open Thursday through Sunday until 2am, it offers a full bar, outdoor seating, and pool tables. The video bar provides an alternative to the dance floor, where the music leans more Mexican than country these days, according to recent patrons.
Parking can be tight, and the $3 cover and dated restrooms have drawn complaints. Sunday is the most reliably attended night. The crowd skews local and predominantly Hispanic, with a mix of lesbians and gay men. If you're seeking a polished venue, this might not fit, but it's a genuine neighborhood spot for those who prefer grit over gloss.
Located in San Antonio's Northcentral area, away from the downtown strip but close to local residential streets.

“best”
It's the best bar I've visited; even though it was my first time, I enjoyed it and found the people friendly. I brought a straight guy and he liked it too.

“This use to be a gay bar”
Sunday is the only decent night here. They used to have a good show on Fridays, but now that's gone. What happened to the beer specials and the country music? And why are there so many lesbians? They are so rude!

“Filthy place”
When Silver Dollar opened in the 80s, it wasn't bad. Now it's dirty, and the crowd is not great. The place is mostly Hispanic now and only plays Mexican music. To each their own. When lesbians were there, it was very low class. This was my first visit in years and definitely my last. Parking is nearly impossible. The restrooms smelled like human waste. Go at your own risk.

“misomer”
Why do they call it a country bar when all they play is Mexican music? Bring back Snuffy's.

“Would Never Go There Again”
A friend suggested this place, so we decided to try it. Wish we hadn't. Parking was tough, there was a $3 cover, and the bathrooms were filthy (with lesbians making out in the men's room). We don't care for Spanish or Mexican music, so we mostly hung out in the Video Bar. Don't bother.
