Pegasus

Festive LGBTQ+ nightclub

About

Bar: Full barBest nights: Fri, Sat, Sun

The tropically themed patio and the scent of Lysol masking something less pleasant set the scene at Pegasus. A San Antonio gay bar since 1994, it offers pool tables, karaoke, drag shows, and a country-western bar section alongside the main dance floor. The crowd leans 20s and 30s, mixed gay and straight, and the vibe swings between laid-back dive and loud drag show depending on the night.

Drinks are cheap compared to other bars on The Strip. Bartenders Lonnie and Jason in the country bar get praise from regulars. The Sunday Beer Busts, especially the Bear Beer Bust on the first Sunday, are a standout reason to visit. After 9 PM the place shifts hard toward drag and a louder crowd.

Located in the Northcentral area of San Antonio, part of the 'Strip' of gay bars.

“A bar with a serious identity crisis”

When I started visiting Pegasus a few years back, it seemed like it wanted to be a trendy, popular spot (even though it didn't look great), but it was still more relaxed than the typical gay bar. It had a little something for everyone, which attracted me over places like The Saint, Sparky's, and The Heat. By this past spring, Pegasus had fully turned into a drag bar focused on queens and their female friends (like many other bars on the strip that I usually avoid), yet it still looks like a rundown dive that smells like vomit and urine, masked cheaply with disinfectant. Not that Pegasus was ever fantastic, but this identity crisis has removed some of its former charm, and I generally avoid drag bars for a reason. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. That said, the bartenders are still mostly friendly (especially the ones in the country-themed bar, so go see them), and the drinks are still slightly cheaper than other spots on the strip. So it's worth visiting for those reasons. Luckily, Pegasus hasn't changed the Sunday Beer Busts, which are still great, particularly the Bear Beer Busts on the first Sunday of each month. I highly recommend going to those. But after 9 PM, unless you enjoy drag queens and all the noise that goes with them, it's better to go elsewhere, like The Annex.

“Insulting”

This place makes a lot of money but is a shabby, unappealing bar. The restrooms are small and always smell. We should have better than this. I don't understand why people tolerate it.

Over a year ago: The owner of this place supports Donald Trump. I recommend spending your LGBTQIA money somewhere else.

“Alright”

I definitely thought the music was great! Drinks were also great and cheap. But it was way too crowded! If you wanted to dance, you had to go outside, and it was freezing. I was also confused by the crowd: lots of gay guys, a few lesbians, lots of straight people. Maybe it's not a gay club but more gay-friendly.
